LA Burgess – Surrey Muse

LA is a captivating performer combining poetry, music and dance to communicate with her audience. She is a poet and a singer who has worked as a Birth Attendant to satisfy her passion for homebirth and natural parenting for over 20 years.

In 2002, while working as a singer of intimate and nostalgic cabaret, she conceived a daughter named Paris. Due to her unique genetics and a condition known as Trisomy 18, this little girl was deemed ‘incompatible with life’. Thus begins LA’s transformational journey from a sacred homebirth to the darker side of death and loss.

Detailed in her autobiographical book ‘From LA to Paris’, performer LA Burgess weaves her personal narrative of a mother in grief with the dark and poignant undertones of cabaret and song. While walking in spirit and awareness, this performance piece chronicles all the stages of grief, complete with tears, hope, rage and ultimately self acceptance. It is a raw and honest poetical account of love, loss and dreams in the shadows.

In the May 25 gathering of Surrey Muse, LA will give us a 20-minute version of her creative experience with life. We are looking forward to have her with us.
