Ali Kazimi – Surrey Muse

Ali Kazimi is a Toronto-based filmmaker and author who in 2019 became the first Indo-Canadian to receive the Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts. Prominent works include feature documentaries Narmada: A Valley Rises, Continuous Journey, and Random Acts of Legacy. Ali has also produced short and mid-length documentaries, experimental films and 3D media rt installations. His films have won more than thirty awards and honours around the world including the Donald Brittain Award for Best Social/Political film, the Golden Gate Award and the Gold Conch for Best Documentary. He is the author of Undesirables: White Canada and the Komagata Maru – An Illustrated History (Douglas & McIntyre 2011) that became a finalist for both the 2012 Vancouver Book Award and 2013 BC Book Prizes. In 2019, the University of British Columbia conferred Ali with a honorary Doctor of Letters degree. Ali is an Associate Professor in the Department of Cinema and Media Arts at York University where he has been teaching since 2006 and has also served as Chair.
