Diary Marif – Surrey Muse

Diary Marif (aka Dyari Xalid Marif) is an Iraqi-Kurdish writer, activist and journalist with over 15 years of experience as a reporter, editor, and researcher. He earned a master’s degree in History from Pune University in India in 2013, and he moved to Vancouver from Iraq in 2017. Diary has been focusing on nonfiction writing and has recently written two book chapters for two different projects. An author at New Canadian Media, he writes about immigrants, newcomers, and minorities. He participates in rallies in solidarity with minorities and subminorities and fights against discrimination and racism. Diary is the recipient of an Honorable Mention for the Susan Crean Award for Nonfiction 2022.

Heather Haley – Surrey Muse

Heather Haley is a multi-media artists integrating disciplines, genres and media. She is the author of novel, The Town Slut’s Daughter, currently being adapted to the stage, and of poetry collections SidewaysThree Blocks West of Wonderland and Skookum Raven. Heather’s writings have appeared in a variety of journals and anthologies. She was poetry editor for the LA Weekly and publisher of the Edgewise Cafe, one of Canada’s first electronic literary magazines. Heather has directed numerous videopoems that became official selections at dozens of international film festivals. Karl Knights – Surrey Muse

Karl Knights is a poet, journalist and a literary critic born in 1996 in Ipswich, UK. His writings have appeared in The GuardianThe Dark HorseThe Poetry ReviewPoetry London and elsewhere. He was a winner of the 2021 New Poets Prize. His debut chapbook, Kin, is available now from the Poetry Business. Karl’s work has been anthologised in England and abroad, in anthologies such as NeurodiVERSE and The Ending Hasn’t Happened Yet. Most recently, a poem appeared in 100 Queer Poems, an anthology from Vintage Books. His first video poem, ‘The Voice You Never See,’ about the pandemic experiences of disabled people in Suffolk, premiered in April 2022. In his journalism, he covers politics and culture, writing on topics such as disabled Barbie dolls, Rain Man, and how it feels to be a shielder in the pandemic. He lives in Suffolk.

Karen Moe – Surrey Muse

Karen Moe is an author, art critic, performer, visual artist, and a feminist activist who is launching her debut book, Victim: A Feminist Manifesto from a Fierce Survivor, in the Spring of 2022. Her work focuses on systemic violence in patriarchy: be it gender, race, the environment or speciesism. Her articles on art have been published in magazines, anthologies and artist catalogues in English and Spanish. Karen has exhibited her art work and performed across Canada, in the US, and in Mexico. She is the founder of the Vigilance Fierce Feminisms Magazine. Karen lives in Mexico City and in British Columbia, Canada.

Carol Neuman – Surrey Muse

Carol Neuman is a poet, writer, literacy activist and a public speaker. Her features on arts and culture, columns on civic engagement, and short form poetry and memoir have appeared in publications including BeatRoute, SEE Magazine, the Edmonton Journal, Room Magazine, and, in the anthology Big: Stories of Life in Plus-Sized Bodies (Caitlin Press, 2020). In 2013, Carol was honored as one of Edmonton’s Top 40 Under 40 for her work as a community leader and organizer. She has served as a board member of the New West Public Library, LitFest – Canada’s non-fiction literary festival, and Vancouver’s Reel Causes among others. Her love of writing was sparked through an after-school job in the late-90’s where she first published concert and movie reviews on one of the world’s earliest online youth culture websites. Today, Carol makes her home on the traditional territories of the Halkomelem-speaking peoples, where she leads a literacy organization serving children and families across British Columbia.
