Malcolm van Delst – Surrey Muse

‘Malcolm van Delst stands out as a lazy writer in a profession
notorious for idlers and bums. She crowd-sourced this bio. She is
a lady who codes, a sometime bitcoin miner fond of get-rich-quick
schemes, and has a knack for dramatifying.’

Malcolm van Delst is a poet, novelist and web designer/developer who is passionate about writing, acting and filmmaking. She began her novel Do the Wrong Thing three years ago during Nanowrimo, and it is expected to come out later this year with another book titled The Low Self-Esteem Reading Room. Her stories and poems have been published at various zines including Tenement; she has appeared in Fringe plays; and, she had the 12th most viewed video at CBC’s now defunct site, Zed. Malcolm works with Vancouver Writers Group where she has created and continue to run a bi-weekly reading, writing and podcasting group and a bi-weekly Let’s Get Visible, self-Publishing and marketing Group. She has an English Literature degree from McMaster University, and diplomas in computer graphics, multimedia, and integrated media from various institutions including Emily Carr Institute where she later taught. Her favorite writers are Doris Lessing, Karl Ove Knausgaard and Sherman Alexie. For the next couple of years, Malcolm intends to increase her publishing pace, write more, read at more events, work on her idea of a one-woman play, and, begin a second novel that will ‘experiment more with form’. Malcolm wrote her first story at eight- and it was about a rabbit meeting a butterfly.

‘Surrey Muse’ a poem by Val Parks

Erato
the muse of poetry
is here with us tonight,
as she has been since
the beginning of spoken word.
Poetry is in the soul of mankind;
it is Erato who draws it out,
who encourages us to speak truth,
forces us to stand exposed
and naked before the world.
She has inspired such greats as
Longfellow, Edna St Vincent Millay,
Shelley, Wordsworth and many others.
She watches over the child
composing rhymes for his amusement,
because she sees a future poet.
Erato is here with us tonight
in this community of like-minded people,
in this society of artistic expression.
She is here with us tonight
in Surrey.

Dedicated to Surrey Muse, this poem was presented by Val Parks in the open mic session of April 28/2017 gathering.

Katheren Szabo – Surrey Muse

Katheren Szabo is a poet, arts activist and a vibrant community organizer. Her poems have been published in over 20 poetry chapbooks and theme based ezines including We Are Newton, Hands & Heart, Bulbs & Beauty. She is a co-founder of Cedar Bark Poets, a presentation group that meets every month; and, a regular contributor to Friends of the Grove and The Plot in Newton, Surrey. Katheren began writing poetry as code, at 11 years of age, to keep her diary safe from her older siblings. ‘I have kept it all‘ she says, ‘and now have a large pile of dusty journals that hold my poetic life within. I am not a public poet and struggle to give voice to my words. We shall embark together on breaking the mute silence of my writing on May 26th at Surrey Muse Event. See you there!’

TeresaKlein-Manolis-YvetteDudleyNeuman-PaulStacey with VirginiaGillespie at Word Arts LIVE! 28 May 2017

Join us for an exciting event featuring Author Teresa Klein, Poet Connor Doyle, Performer Yvette Dudley-Neuman, Open Mic Opener Paul Stacey with Host Virginia Gillespie at Alexandra Neighborhood House.

Teresa KleinTeresa Klein is a writer, dreamer and a community leader. Her investigative journey with her long-term dream group inspired the writing of a collaborative book relating the effects of their dream work on their lives. Her exploration prompted a pilgrimage that began in 2011. This pilgrimage re-set the definition of home to reach far beyond any set place and embraced a universal sense of family. Her encounters with life through this time deepened her relationship with earth-based wisdom and established a trusting relationship with her intuitive knowing. Her pilgrimage continues as she creates and becomes involved with overseeing a Community Garden/Medicine Wheel in Newton, an area of Surrey that has experienced trauma, with a visible presence of homelessness and substance abuse issues. Beginning its second growing season, despite its challenges it has become a centre for community engagement bridging generational, cultural and socio economic diversity to create a warm and welcoming space.
