Ajmer Rode – Surrey Muse

Ajmer Rode in his Study (1)

Ajmer Rode is a poet of unique sensibilities, and an author of a wide range of subjects. He has published more than 20 books and chapbooks of poetry, drama, prose and translation in Punjabi and English. His works have been included in several English and Punjabi anthologies, and his books are part of the curriculum in several universities in India.

Most of Ajmer’s poetry is published in a 1000-page book Leela (co-authored with Poet Navtej Bharati) for which the authors received the Anad Foundation Delhi’s poetry award in 2011. As well, Ajmer is among eight international poets whose poems have been inscribed in bronze on a public wall outside the office of Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation complex in downtown Seattle.

Ajmer is a pioneering contributor of Canadian Punjabi drama. He has written and directed ten stage plays, and his full length play Komagata Maru, recently digitized and published on-line by Simon Fraser University, was the first full length Punjabi play staged in Canada.

In 2010, Ajmer took part in the Commonwealth Writers Meet in Delhi with writers from 40 countries; he was on the National Council of The Writers Union of Canada and chaired its Racial Minority Writers Committee; he is the recipient of Best Overseas Author award by the Punjab Languages department (1994), and of the Anad Foundation Delhi award (2011).

Before becoming a full time writer in 1994, Ajmer was an engineer and worked as assistant professor, computer engineer, Planning Engineer and a Global Warming Expert at various institutions and companies.
His first book, Vishava Di Nuhar published by the Punjabi University expounds Einstein’s Theory of Relativity in fictional and dialogue form.

At this time, Ajmer is finishing up a book of poetry for which he was awarded a Canada Council grant.

At the January 22 gathering of Surrey Muse, Ajmer Rode will begin the Open Mic session.
