Arlene Bowman – Surrey Muse

Arlene Bowman is a Dine’ filmmaker who shoots still photographs, performs open mic, sings, and choreographs modern dance-jazz. Her films and videos include: Locked Doors (4 min. song poem video, 2013), Illegal Anger (4 min. song poem video, 2011), The Graffiti‘ (30 min. experimental drama video, 2010), ‘Song Journey‘ (hour documentary video, 1994), Women and Men Are Good Dancers (5 min. video, 1994) and Navajo Talking Picture (40 min. color 16mm film, 1986). Long before Arlene became a filmmaker, she drew people’s faces and bodies in elementary school art classes. At 14, her interest changed to still photography, and in 1971 she received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Still Photography from San Francisco Art Institute. When she moved to Los Angeles in 1977, the still photography changed to filmmaking, and she obtained M.F.A. in film production at University of California-Los Angeles in 1986. Now settled in Vancouver, she continues to work on her Our Language project about Dine’ & Na Dene languages. She is now working to apply for production funding for Our Language documentary, to produce-write Tourquoise Sun in LA, a feature drama, a documentary-animation about coho salmon, and to create an Indigenous Woman Filmmakers’ Tourquoise Filmmaker Conference and a non-profit organization for low income and Indigenous filmmakers.
