Jovian Radheshwar – Surrey Muse

Jovian Radheshwar is a hip-hop musician, poet, and educator. In 2012, he and Bobby Musgrave created Endangered Species a hip-hop collective based in Santa Barbara, California. Along with Ed Keenan of Los Angeles, Endangered Species has performed at various locations including LA, Santa Barbara, Vancouver and Surrey. Their album, ‘No Hooks’ explores themes of technological change, existential philosophy, race, America, empire, drugs, sex, heartbreak, and destruction. Jovian grew up in the 1990’s in New York City and then moved to California. His artistic influences include Pink Floyd, Modest Mouse, Outkast, Nas, Atmosphere, Hieroglyphics Crew, Wu-Tang Clan, and great American literature from the likes of Hunter S. Thompson. His PhD is in existential freedom and features novel interpretations of Nietzsche, Heidegger, Fromm, Berlin, and Fanon. Jovian was born in Bombay (“Mumbai” is for fascists), after teaching political science and Black studies in California for over ten years, he followed his love up north to Vancouver. He now lives in New Westminster where he is a professor of political science at Douglas College.

Endangered Species – Surrey Muse

Endangered Species is a rap group that has performed shows in Santa Barbara, Isla Vista, Goleta, and Los Angeles. We interviewed Rapper/Poet/Professor Jovian Radheshwar who collaborated as MC Bitter Buffalo with Bobby Musgrave (Pensive Blue Polar Bear) and Ed Keenan (DJ California Condor) in exploring the endangered nature of existence in a technologized modern world for the album ‘No Hooks’ (2012). Having grown up listening to rap during an increasingly racialized America in the mid-1990s, Jovian finds rap to be a powerful medium for making a statement both personal and political. His poetry explores life, politics, history, difference, drugs, science, knowledge, and the globalization of race. Jovian was born in Bombay and raised in New York, later he taught Black Studies, Global Studies, and Political Science in California for over ten years. His music inspirations include Outkast, Nas and Pink Floyd where Hunter S. Thompson, Friedrich Nietzsche, and Frantz Fanon are among his literary influences. Jovian lives in Burnaby and works as a professor of Political Science at Douglas College in New Westminster.
