Heidi McKenzie – Surrey Muse

Heidi McKenzie is a Toronto-based ceramic artist, arts journalist and ceramic arts reviewer who has exhibited and been collected nationally and internationally. Her work engages issues of identity, and belonging, seeking to transcend Eurocentricism. She is the recipient of Craft Ontario Awards and Best in Show Ontario Artists Association Biennial Award. Work from a 2019 solo exhibition was acquired by Global Affairs Canada. As an artist of colour, Heidi is an active convener of critical discussion and writing around issues of race and migration. She moderated a panel on the Decolonization of Clay at the 2019 Australian International Ceramics Triennale; the Paradox of Identity, at NCECA’s 50th in 2017; and was to exhibit in a four-woman show, ‘Disruption’ at NCECA 2020 in Richmond, Virginia, disrupting the male-dominated hetero-normative contemporary canon. Heidi completed her Diploma in Crafts & Design at Sheridan College, Canada, in 2012 and an MFA in Curatorial Practice and Art Criticism at the Ontario College of Art & Design University in 2014.
