Katheren Szabo – Surrey Muse

Katheren Szabo is a poet, arts activist and a vibrant community organizer. Her poems have been published in over 20 poetry chapbooks and theme based ezines including We Are Newton, Hands & Heart, Bulbs & Beauty. She is a co-founder of Cedar Bark Poets, a presentation group that meets every month; and, a regular contributor to Friends of the Grove and The Plot in Newton, Surrey. Katheren began writing poetry as code, at 11 years of age, to keep her diary safe from her older siblings. ‘I have kept it all‘ she says, ‘and now have a large pile of dusty journals that hold my poetic life within. I am not a public poet and struggle to give voice to my words. We shall embark together on breaking the mute silence of my writing on May 26th at Surrey Muse Event. See you there!’

Alan Girling – Surrey Muse

alan-girling

Alan Girling is a poet who also writes short fiction and creative prose. He has received two first place poetry prizes, one in Vancouver Co-op Radio Community Dreams Contest and the other in Royal City Literary Arts Society’s Write On! Contest. He was a finalist for the Larry Turner Award for Non-Fiction, and once had a short play produced for Vancouver’s Walking Fish Festival.

He has had his work featured online, in journals and anthologies, on radio, at local live readings, in shop windows, and in one ‘slim’ chapbook. The diverse venues and publications include Lichen Arts and Letters Preview, Hobart, The MacGuffin, Smokelong Quarterly, Pagitica, Artella, FreeFall, Six Sentences, Galleon, In My Bed, Ink, Sweat and Tears, Body Breakdowns, Blue Skies Poetry, Black Heart Magazine, Canadian Stories, The Rotary Dial, CBC Radio, World Poetry Cafe, Poetic Justice, and Surrey Muse.

Alan grew up in North Vancouver, stayed in Japan for six years, and now lives in Richmond. He teaches at Langara College and ‘otherwise tends to write poetry or occasionally, as in a past life, short fiction‘.

Alan Girling also is a rare individual of acute perceptions and strong social sensibilities regarding race, class and the environment. If you happen to exchange email messages with him, expect to find at the bottom something like this as his signature: ‘We’re in a giant car heading toward a brick wall and everyone’s arguing over where they’re going to sit‘, by David Suzuki.

But before that car hits that wall, we are hoping to have Alan present his work at the May 26 gathering of Surrey Muse as the Featured Author.
