Jillian Christmas – Surrey Muse

Jillian Christmas is a stunning performer who delivers with ease her poetics of depth, awareness and protest. An innovator, a firebrand community developer, and a musician with her own band, she won Grand Poetry-Slam Championship titles at both the Vancouver BedRocc poetry-slam (2011) and the Vancouver Poetry Slam (2012, 2014). She represented Vancouver at the Women of the World Poetry Slam in Minneapolis, Minnesota (2013) and Austin, Tx (2014).

Jillian’s work has been published in a number of collections including Matrix New Queer Writing (issue 98), and The Great Black North (anthology). She has held spots on five Canadian slam teams, and she has competed in nine North American national poetry slams.

From 2011-2014, Jillian served as a member of Spoken Word Canada’s board of directors, with duties regarding the development of national policy to improve political dynamics within the spoken word community, and to increase anti-oppression initiatives. She has facilitated spoken word workshops for youth and adults across the country.

Born and raised in Markham ON, Jillian now lives in Vancouver BC where she works as the Artistic Director of Versəs Festival of Words, and, she is preparing to go back on the road with her band Late Night Ruckus.

Isaac Yuen – Surrey Muse

Isaac Yuen situates and writes about the self in the forms of critical and creative non-fiction that revolves around ideas of nature, culture, and identity. He is the winner of the 2013 Web of Life Foundation international essay competition. His works can be found in Ricepaper, Alternatives Journal: Canada’s environmental voice, Flyway: Journal of writing and environment, and Schema Magazine: For the interculturally-minded.

A first-generation Chinese-Canadian, Isaac is also the creator of Ekostories, an award-winning blog and essay collection that explores the power of narrative to evoke personal and societal change.

Manolis – Surrey Muse

Manolis (Emmanuel Aligizakis) is a Greek-Canadian poet and author who has published over twenty collections of poems, three novels and numerous poetry translations including the works of great Greek poets such as Yannis Ritsos, Constantine Cavafy and George Seferis. His translation ‘George Seferis-Collected Poems’ was shortlisted for the Greek National Literary Awards. His poems in both Greek and English have been published in Canada, United States, Sweden, Hungary, Slovakia, Romania, Australia, Jordan, Serbia, Brazil and Greece; and his poems have been translated into Spanish, Romanian, Swedish, German, Hungarian, Arabic, Turkish, Serbian, Portuguese and Russian languages. Manolis lives in White Rock, and spends his time writing, gardening, traveling, and, heading Libros Libertad, an independent publishing company he founded in 2006.
