Tonight’s Surrey Muse Event is CANCELLED

Please note that the February 23 gathering of Surrey Muse, scheduled for tonight, has been cancelled due to hazardous weather conditions.

We’ll make alternate arrangements to have our featured Author Lydia Kwa, featured Poet Raul Gatica, featured Performer Sherry Duggal, Booksigning Author Ashok Bhargava, and Open Mic Opener Mariam Zohra to present in the near future. Gratitude to Raghavendra Rao K.V. for the Featured Art on this month’s poster.

This is our first cancellation since Surrey Muse began in 2011.

Thank you for your ongoing support.

Raul Gatica – Surrey Muse

Raul Gatica is an Indigenous Ñuu Savi poet born in San Miguelito (Tlaxiaco, Oaxaca) Mexico whose verses and short stories have been published in French, German, Russian, Spanish, Kurdish, Catalan and indigenous languages. Titles include Borrowed Character (short stories), Shoes on the Rocks (anthology of six Latin American writers in Canada), and his latest Broken Man that won an international poetry book award. In Mexico, he received the Oaxaca Provincial award for young poets in 1997 and the National award for short stories in 2000. At this time, he is working on Invisibles & Disposables, a book of stories about temporary foreign farm workers in Canada. Raul is also the editor of the cultural magazine El Cencerro, and a co-founder of Dignidad Migrante, a Temporary Foreign Farm Worker (TFFW) organization. Because of his struggle to defend the land, forest and the rights of Indigenous people, he has faced imprisonment, disappearance, torture and exile. In 2005 he arrived as a refugee in Vancouver, and become a Canadian Citizen in 2014. In 2017, he started to work with Kinbrace, an organization helping asylum seekers, where he coordinates the program Beyond Refuge.
