Submissions Open: Surrey Muse Art & Literature Awards 2023

Submit your stories, songs, articles/memoir, poems and artworks to the five Surrey Muse Art & Literature Awards 2023. View the Eligibility Criteria, Submission Guidelines and the judging process at the links below:

Vera Manuel Award for Poetry
Joy Kogawa Award for Fiction
Faith Nolan Award for Music
Susan Crean Award for Nonfiction
Norval Morrisseau Award for Visual Arts

Each award is open to Canadian poets, fiction writers, musicians, nonfiction writers and visual artists. Each award promises $1000 for the first-place winner, citations and perks for the second and third place winners, Honorable Mentions and the Longlisters.

The five Judges and 10 Jury Members will be announced during July, stay tuned.

Submissions timeline is June 1- August 15, 2023. The winners will be announced on October 28, and the awards ceremony will take place on November 25 in Surrey, British Columbia.

Last year, over 300 writers, poets, musicians and artists residing in 66 different cities in Canada, participated in this contest. View 2022 Award Winners

Dorothy Ellen Palmer- Surrey Muse

Dorothy Ellen Palmer is a former English/Drama teacher, improv coach and union Branch President, now a disabled senior writer and disability activist. Her short fiction and nonfiction appear in over forty literary and disability journals. Long-listed for the Re-Lit Award, her first novel, When Fenelon Falls, (Coach House, 2010) features a disabled teen protagonist in the Moonwalk-Woodstock summer of 1969. Her  adoption-disability memoir, Falling for Myself, (Wolsak and Wynn, 2019), was a finalist for The Hamilton Book Awards, and  acclaimed by The Toronto Star, The Globe and Mail, and Quill & Quire. She is the winner of the 2020 Helen Henderson Award for disability journalism, has served on FOLD’s Accessibility Advisory Committee, and appeared at FOLD, GritLIT, WOTS, The Next Chapter, The Eh List, and CBC Radio. She can always be found tweeting @depalm.

Veronika Gorlova – Surrey Muse

Veronika Gorlova is a queer, autistic, Jewish poet and writer living on the unceded territories of the Musqueum, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations, also known as Vancouver. She immigrated to Canada from Ukraine when she was 5 years old and has lived across many parts of the country. She received an Honorable Mention for the 2022 Susan Crean Award for Non-Fiction and her work can be found in Emerge 22.

Marian Dodds – Surrey Muse

Marian Dodds is a writer and an educator. Her work has been published in Emerge 18, BCTF Teacher newsmagazine, Post Script, Above and Beyond, Canada’s Arctic Journal, and Spider Webs Unite. She has taught at public schools and universities, coordinated
union social justice programs, designed curriculum, written for professional teacher publications, edited the BC Teachers’ Federation flagship magazine Teacher, and she has volunteered in Africa and Central America. Most recently, she worked for three years in Ethiopia, a country famous for jailing journalists; she avoided deportation by becoming adept at self-censorship while blogging at Spider Webs Unite. A 2018 graduate of the SFU Writer’s Studio and the TWS Graduate Workshop, Marian is
currently completing a memoir exploring the existential underbelly of her time in Ethiopia. Her next project will juxtapose her late 50’s and early 60’s childhood memories with the rapid changes in Canada’s Arctic. In 2022, Marian’s work was shortlisted for Federation of BC Writers’ Creative Non-fiction Award, and it was selected as the Second Place Winner for the Susan Crean Award for Nonfiction.
