Catherine Lewis – Surrey Muse

Catherine Lewis is a Chinese Canadian writer and poet. She is the author of the poetry chapbook Zipless (845 Press, 2021), and she was a finalist in The Fiddlehead’s and The Humber Literary Review’s/Creative Nonfiction Collective Society’s creative nonfiction contests in 2021. A graduate of the Writer’s Studio at Simon Fraser University and of the Vancouver Manuscript Intensive, she attended the Banff Centre Literary Arts residency ‘Poetry, Politics and Embodiment’ in Fall 2021. Born in Hong Kong and raised in Canada, Catherine lives in Vancouver on the traditional unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh peoples.

Betsy Warland – Surrey Muse

Betsy Warland is a poet, author, editor, mentor and educator who has published over twelve books of poetry and creative nonfiction, among them, the latest: ‘Oscar of Between, a memoir of identity and ideas‘ (2016); the most influential: ‘Breathing the Page: Reading the Act of Writing‘ (2010) and ‘Bloodroot: Tracing the Untelling of Motherloss‘ (2000). Betsy designed and directed The Writer’s Studio at Simon Fraser University from 2001-2012 where she initiated the annual 2-day DTES Writers’ Jamboree at Carnegie Centre (2008-2012) that helped create Thursdays Writing Collective. In 2013, she established Oscar’s Salon, an interactive and collaborative program. Betsy co-founded the Creative Writers Nonfiction Collective in 2004 that holds an annual conference. She also founded and is a mentor in the one-on-one six-month international Vancouver Manuscript Intensive. Betsy received the Mayor’s Arts Award for Literature in Vancouver in 2016. In 2017, she worked as the Lyric Prose and Poetry Mentor at The Writer’s Studio.

Betsy initiated the Toronto Women’s Writing Collective in 1975. The same year, she initiated and co-coordinated the Women and Words—les femmes et le mots conference (Vancouver 1983), that brought together one thousand women from across Canada involved in different aspects of contemporary literature. Betsy lives and works in Vancouver.
