Wayde Compton – Surrey Muse

Wayde Compton is an author, editor, educator and a publisher who has written five books and has edited two literary anthologies. His collection of short stories, The Outer Harbour, won the City of Vancouver Book Award in 2015, and he won a National Magazine Award for Fiction in 2011. Wayde’s work has been a finalist for two other City of Vancouver Book Awards as well as the Dorothy Livesay Poetry Prize. In 2006, Wayde co-founded Commodore Books, Western Canada’s first Black Canadian literary press. He has been writer-in-residence at Simon Fraser University, Green College at the University of British Columbia, and the Vancouver Public Library. From 2012-18, he administrated the Creative Writing Program in Continuing Studies at SFU, including the award-winning Writer’s Studio. His latest book, The Blue Road, is a fantasy graphic novel for young adults, illustrated by April dela Noche Milne. Wayde is now working on a re-imagining of The Argonautika by Apollonius of Rhodes as a surrealist slave narrative set on the west coast of North America in the 18th century. Wayde teaches in the faculty of Creative Writing at Douglas College in New Westminster and Coquitlam.

Be the first Poet Laureate of the City of Surrey – Apply Today

Surrey Muse is delighted to announce that the City of Surrey is looking for its first Poet Laureate!

It’s a two or a three-year term. Eligible are the poets who use ‘spoken word poetry, written poetry, or multimedia demonstrations of poetry’ and who ‘reside in Surrey or the Lower Mainland (with preference given to Surrey residents) or to poets who are strongly connected to Surrey through their work, who have an established body of work, and who have been acknowledged for prominent contributions in their career.’

The Poet Laureate ‘will be chosen to act as an ambassador’ for the City of Surrey and the People of Surrey, ‘advocating for literacy and the literary arts and helping to raise the status of poetry, language, and the arts’ in the everyday lives of Surrey residents. And so, we encourage poets from diverse backgrounds to apply. Applications are sought by the City of Surrey in partnership with Surrey Libraries, Cultural Development Advisory Committee, Surrey Arts Services, Surrey International Writers’ Conference, Arts Council of Surrey, Creative Writing at Simon Fraser University, Semiahmoo Arts, and Surrey Muse.
