Susan Crean is an established author of non-fiction who has explored through her research and writing, various aspects of Canadian art, culture and society. Her titles include Finding Mr. Wong (Talonbooks 2018), The Laughing One — A Journey to Emily Carr (HarperCollins 2001, shortlisted for GG), and Grace Hartman — A Woman for Her Time (New Star Books 1995). Susan has been actively involved with writers organizations and agencies to lobby for author rights; she was also the Chair of The Writers Union of Canada in 1991-1992. Her books have been nominated for distinctions, and some have received literary awards. Susan is at once from the East and the West Coast as she switches between Toronto and Vancouver every decade or so. Her most recent book, Finding Mr. Wong is set in Vancouver and Toronto, it is the story of a head tax payer named Wong Dong Wong who came to Canada in 1911 at the age of sixteen, and was hired as a cook and houseman by Susan’s grandfather in the same year. Crean grew up with Mr. Wong who was both teacher and a grandfather-by-affection to her. Her search took her twice to Toishan in Guangdong, China where she found his home village and his story.
