Zilla Jones – Surrey Muse

Zilla Jones is a mixed-race African-Canadian criminal defence lawyer, anti-racism educator, singer and writer in Treaty 1 (Winnipeg.) In 2024, she was shortlisted for the CBC Short Story contest, and in 2023, she was a Journey Prize winner and a 2023 RBC/Writers Trust Bronwen Wallace fiction award finalist. She has also won the Malahat Open Season, Jacob Zilber, Freefall and GritLit festival fiction competitions, and was runner-up in The ex-Puritan’s Austin Clarke competition, second place in Prairie Fire’s contest and honourable mention in Room’s contest. Her work appears in Prairie Fire, The Malahat Review, Prism International, FreeFall, Room, The Fiddlehead, Bayou Magazine, The Journey Prize Stories and the Nottingham Writers Studio George Floyd anthology. Her debut novel, The World So Wide, is forthcoming in 2025, and a short story collection, So Much to Tell, is forthcoming in 2026, both with Cormorant Books.
