Mariam Zohra – Surrey Muse

Mariam is a poet, and a multi-disciplinary artist combining music, video, drama, painting and poetry. A collection of her poems, lyrics and drawings is published in These Tales Are True (Purple Poppy Press 2016). A selection of her poems appeared in Naked Crossings (Ed. Valerie B.-Taylor, NWW 2014). She studied Philosophy and Creative Writing at Douglas College in Vancouver where she now works as a freelance desktop publisher, graphic designer, videographer and musician.

She published her first collection of poetry Not to Understand (Diva Publications, Toronto 1990) at 14, offering poems from age nine to thirteen. Later, some of her poems appeared in Toronto’s Feminist Quarterly Fireweed, and in Transitions a textbook anthology produced for Grade 10 students by Peel Board of Education. Mariam also worked with Theatre In The Rough, a youth drama collective, where as part of the team she developed and delivered drama outreach workshops at various schools in Toronto.

Mariam is a founding Member of Surrey Muse, and she serves as its Art Director/Graphic Designer. View the event posters created by her:
